Experience sight fishing for redfish on the beautiful Crystal Coast of North Carolina
From Eastern North Carolina, Mason has been fishing the Onslow Bay area for 20+ years. He started his professional career in Alaska, guiding for salmon and rainbow trout, following the footsteps of his uncle. After spending his winters in Emerald Isle, chasing fish on the fly, Mason is ready to share the thrilling experience of hunting redfish in the marsh of the Crystal Coast.
Mason is an OUPV USCG Licensed Captain
He is also CPR/First Aid and WFR Certified
The vessel we'll be fishing on is a 17' technical poling skiff, with a 72" beam flared at the bow. A one of a kind custom skiff built by IMC Boatworks. This is a true poling skiff, made to access the tightest creeks and skinniest water. Drafting about 6" with a full load, and a 12" freeboard; it is a low profile boat that is made to do what we're here for.
Outfitted with a forward casting platform, wide gunwales, side console design, and an open cockpit; it provides a comfortable and relatively spacious experience for 1-2 anglers.
(For any questions or concerns about the boat please contact us. We want to make your experience as comfortable as possible)
Experience what it's like to hunt for red drum in the grassy flats and marshy creeks of the Crystal Coast. Either searching for tailing reds on the flood tides of the summer, or chasing around schools in the gin clear creeks in the winter.
We are focused on a more active style of fishing known as "sight fishing". Using flies or artificial lures, we attempt to make a stealthy, smooth approach to potentially wary fish. This can pose to be a challenging feat, both to angler and guide, but with that, equally gratifying.
While primarily targeting red drum, there is a possibility to catch multiple different species in the area, depending on season and location. Other common species that you are likely to interact with are; speckled trout, flounder, black drum, and more. Also expect to see a variety of baitfish and crustaceans.
The coastal region of Eastern NC is home to a plethora of different, exciting wildlife such as; dolphins, herons, osprey, bald eagles, pelicans, turtles, alligators, rays, skates, sharks, raccoons, white tail deer, marsh birds, black bear and much more. While the season can dictate the likelihood of different creatures' presence, you are almost guaranteed to experience more than the fish you are looking for.
All rods, reels, flies/lures and line are included in your trip, although you are welcome to bring your own. We typically use 7-8wt fly rods with floating line for most applications. For gear, a medium-light rod matched with a 2500-3000 reel is recommended. Bottled water will be available. All USCG required safety equipment will be on board of the vessel.
What's Recommended to Bring
Food is not included, but you may bring a meal if desired. Photography is available and provided by the guide, but you may bring your own device if you choose.
